We’re going to spend the next several weeks looking at the UPSIDE KINGDOM that is the LORD’s and how we can live into it. We’re flipping things upside down.
We have entered a new season of life when it comes to math in our house. Moving to California and getting the boys into school has proved most challenging when it comes to helping them with their math. Apparently out here there seems to be a trend of doing things differently for different’s sake. We’ve only had a few meltdown moments and a handful of tears trying to sort through arrows and progressions and a barrage of unnecessary steps. I think I’m doing better though. I still don’t understand why basic adding and subtracting or multiplying and dividing are no longer sufficient.
In scripture, there is a math equation that doesn’t make any sense but I’ve found it be absolutely true. 6 is greater than 7.
The premise of this particular equation is about ‘less than’ and ‘greater than’. God implemented this plan and it proves to be an anomaly from an earthly perspective. 6 is greater than 7 not on paper but only when we humans STOP for long enough to acknowledge we are NOT God and instead, we take a break from our regular grind.
The Sabbath is a practice of REST and RESTORATION as established by God in the Creation story (Gen 2). It’s a FAITH decision to stop our work recognizing that the world will continue to spin and life will go on despite our absence. It’s a rhythm of sustenance, of breathing.
In John 3:30 we read, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” Other versions say, “He must become greater and greater and I must become less and less.”
John the Baptist was responding to people who were raising a concern about Jesus and the work he was doing. They thought John should be jealous, or at least concerned. But John just celebrated what Jesus was doing because he understood the math at hand. He knew the truth of 6 being greater than 7. He lived to make God greater than himself.
When we work 7 days without taking a break, when we spend every day chasing the hustle, worshiping ourselves, and we think we’re getting MORE done. The truth is, we’re slowly dying. So, when we practice faith in God and embrace the order that He instituted, we do more. As we become less and God becomes greater, our effectiveness, outreach, ministry, influence, and life exponentially increases.
So, try some new math! Take a break. Trust God. Rest. Be Restored. Take 6.
