The human body is filled with hundreds of little miracles and unbelievable or fascinating systems and details. It is one of both masterful art pieces and intricate science experiences. From toenails that grow but can be cut without pain to temperature regulating hairs and symmetry right to left to dissonance in unilateral or unidirectional expressions, it is the REAL first wonder of the world!
But it’s not all pretty or amazing. Some things are downright nasty and the way in which humans, particularly little boys behave in these certain functions, can be repulsive. I’m not talking just burps and farts, at least in our house those are regular and mostly funny. I’m talking the more nauseating things like poop and throw up and green snot just sitting on the upper lip.
There’s one more bit of nastiness that I cannot escape. It’s a body production turned snack time – eating boogers! This is one of the most dis-grossting things about tiny humans. And the only thing worse than watching one of my boys (or any kid really) dig for a nasty nugget and proceed to masticate the maleficent morsel, is watching a grown person do it. I’ve only see it a couple of times, but it does happen, can’t be unseen, and will ruin your day. If you’re one of them who does…please stop! :o
In the temptation of Jesus, we see the bigger issue of human reality and carnal struggle played out. Jesus is in a heightened spiritual state after fasting for 40 days yet naturally hungry. So, the enemy approaches him and the battle that ensues is what we all find ourselves up against.
We read about the first attack being on the flesh of Jesus and the physical body. He says to Jesus, “Tell these stones to become bread,” trying to appeal to the natural and innocent craving. To this Jesus replies very astutely, “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (We’re in Matt 4)
Here’s what we need to understand. Our body is full of impulses and urges, in fact, that are God given and completely normal, like eating when we’re hungry and clearing our nasal passages when they’re closed. The problem is when we turn to these desires ALONE and only seek to meet them, NO MATTER THE COST! Rocks don’t make good bread and boogers don’t make tasty snacks.
When the urges become the end of our pursuit, our spirit will be starved and eventually die. We must learn, as Jesus taught, to not be controlled by them but live instead to discover the word of God and to follow the word of God. Otherwise, we will end up turning stones into snacks and boogers into biscuits, and NOBODY wants to see that!
So, what urge (even natural one) is consuming you and becoming a vain pursuit in and of itself, and is keeping you from discovering the more satisfying word of God? What’s causing you to miss the will of God? Best case scenario is to pick it, flick it, and don’t lick it!
