Our 3rd son is a fantastic creature full of surprises. He’s the one I found in the morning in his crib, not once but twice, with a poop-mural in the works. I’ve caught him in the sink “watering himself” (not taking a drink just soaking his body) because he was “dehydrated.” I witnessed him drinking water STRAIGHT out of a flower vase – no flowers present, just found it and decided to use it for a glass! There is no shortage of fantastic stories that I’m sure I won’t remember all but are equal parts surprising and entertaining and maddening!
His name means STONE. And this ROCK means business. Every year I take a father-son birthday date with each boy and enjoy a one-on-one meal of their choice (Golden ‘puke bucket’ Corral is often chosen) and some special fun activity. While eating, we always discuss the past year and look into the future. I ask meaningful questions and pry deep into their world. We talk nonsense, common sense, dollars and cents, among all kinds of other things. I absolutely LOVE IT!
I’ve talked each year with Axton about the properties of stone and what that hardness, resilience, and indestructability means in his life and for his future. We look at scripture that aligns with it and what God can do with someone of his composition.
This year I went a different route.
As I prepared for the date, my mind was brought to things done with rocks and specifically small smooth stones in scripture. So, we talked about the properties in that regards and being used in the hands of a skillful warrior to take down GIANTS. (Read 1 Samuel 17 for context.)
My desire is to lead my boys to trust God first, but then build them up to feel empowered to overcome anything life throws and be a force that disrupts, breaks up, and brings down the powers of darkness in the world.
As we continue in our series of the R.O.C.K. I cannot help but wonder if there is something you are NOT being used for that this world is in desperate need of. The stones chosen in the story and the one that slayed the giant, were just sitting in a creek doing nothing, maybe just waiting, but going nowhere fast.
Do you feel a sense of longing, a pull to a deeper calling, a desire for something more? Is your current state of existence constantly leaving you wondering what else is out there for you or what all your life could hold?
Would you consider letting God use you for something greater? Who knows what giants need to fall, what walls need to come down, what battles needs victory, and you could be just the STONE to do it! It is YOUR time!!!
