Faith or Science. Faith and Science. Faith is Science.
This brain teaser seems to be part of the conundrum of many in the world today but it’s also one of the platforms in the popular sitcom, the prequel to The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon.
I contend that they are not opposites, just pieces of the same puzzle.
In a young gifted boy-genius we see an comical story unfold where science is put up against religion and the uniqueness of the individual is painted in a beautiful and authentic masterpiece, revealing a personal relationship with God in the midst of all that life brings.
From tragedy to triumph, from struggle to success, from pain to purpose, and from conflict to questions, God is drawing each of us near.
Fun fact:
The theme song for Young Sheldon is ‘Mighty Little Man’ sung by Steve Burns, the BLUE’s CLUES guy!!!!!
The chorus says this:
Nobody else is stronger than I am
Yesterday I moved a mountain
I bet I could be your hero
I am a mighty little man
This comes after the first verse where he has a revelatory moment - almost like God meets him in his living room.
Science and Math, bumble bees and ants, hurricanes and tornadoes, you and me all have our identity and power from and in the LORD!!!
Perfection seems to be something Young Sheldon wrestles with as he works to make sense of the world and all its fascinating details and his place in it.
He says this to his mom in one episode to encourage her faith despite his own lacking of it and I want to share it with you. When responding to his mom’s question of, “But I thought you didn’t believe in God,” he said talking about the perfection of gravitational force for sustenance of life as well as the whole solar system, “I don’t, but the precision of the universe makes it logical to believe there is a Creator.”
Today, I just want to be more contemplative than persuasive. Let the evidence around you in the world, in your life, in your body, speak to you about the God of the universe!
Let your spirit be awakened to the truth inside of you that your body speaks of God as if it had His signature within.
The very breath you take the sound of the name of the LORD that the Israelites knew for God. (YHWH)*
The DNA double helix strands through your body have the name of the LORD in its chain with the sulfur bridges holding the pairs numeric value corresponding to the letters. (YHWH)*
There’s a glycoprotein called laminin that is a cell adhesion molecule and basically holds things together in your body. (YHWH)*
Young Sheldon takes us for a ride and through a barrage of moments that make us laugh, cry, think, and wonder. At the end of the day, I wonder if you’ve found the reality of God in your life as close as your breath or cells in your body. I wonder how that has changed things for you? I wonder if you are living your days seeking and trusting the God of the universe.
