The second part of the physical body I want to visit is the things that go on inside. These are the unseen aspects that largely take place in the mind – the mental and emotional elements that often go untreated or aren’t dealt with due to their invisible nature.
If the body is a temple as we looked at last week, then mental health is the network of supporting beams, walls, screws, and glue that keep things standing as well as the system of wires and cables that power the machine.
Small cracks don’t bring down the building, but they grow and if left untouched, will contribute to inevitable breakdown and potential catastrophe. Exposed wires and short circuits are both very dangerous fire hazards that produce deadly disasters and must be repaired.
Mental health and emotional well-being can be just as destructive as faulty wires and poorly constructed or damaged building interiors.
The enemy is one of craftiness who plays unfair. He will attack us in our weakest moments and most vulnerable places. Sometimes, he hits our strengths because we have become arrogant and rely on our own power, capacity, and ability.
Often, however, the enemy attacks where we are already hurting, struggling, or broken. We’ve been dealing with cracks in the walls of our mind, covering them up, writing them off, ignoring them for too long while the enemy keeps stressing them and adding load until they break and we crumble!
Paul knows we’re in more than a physical battle, so he tells us to be transformed through renewing our mind (Romans 12:2). And he implores us to take the thoughts in our head prisoners of war and turn them into slaves (2 Cor 10:4-5) ). He also gives directives as to what should fill our minds and the thoughts that will lead to complete peace (Phil 4:6-9)
Rene Descartes has said, “I THINK, Therefore I AM.” While this is a psychological self-realization of one’s own existence, I think it holds more value for this conversation. This is a very practical way of saying that our thoughts define our reality. Whether it is an insecurity, broken body image, wounds from someone who was very close/influential, false narratives from years of toxic or abusive relationship, or just the barrage of self-sabotaging thoughts, what consumes our mind, controls our life.
So, what problem are you facing that is sourced from your mind? What scars are telling you lies that have become the only version of truth that you know? What stories have you believed and continue to tell that keep you from experiencing the COMPLETE PEACE of GOD?
May you find new thoughts, renewed thinking, and begin the healing work inside your head and heart today! Don’t try to just get through it on your own. It’s ok to get help, go to counseling, seek medical or spiritual professionals for aid.
You are enough. You are loved. You are redeemed. You are so much more!
