The physical body is one of absolute divine creativity and supreme mastery. From the smallest detail of the tiniest cell to the intricate and inexplicable systems of blood flow and eyesight to the complexities of the emotions and mental facilities, there is no shortage of things to marvel at when it comes to the human body.
But, as much as there is to celebrate and stand astonished by, there are also things that are extremely challenging, painful, and rather unfortunate.
There are 3 aspects of bodily struggles that standout to me , so I’d like to give you a biblical perspective on each. I could spend a full year on the earthly body and all the different aspects or features but this should suffice for now.
First, let’s look at the seen – that which is external, or the physical issues, meaning they require external involvement, or they have to do with the senses. Second, I want to visit the unseen aspects that largely take place in the mind – the mental and emotional elements that often go untreated or aren’t acknowledged, appreciated, or dealt with due to their invisible nature. Finally, we’re going to dive into the consumption injunction – this involves eating but includes anything put into the body, from feeding our minds to all consumable content and products.
Do you not know that your body is a temple? This is a question that Paul asked of the Corinthians, and he continues with a second part inquiring about the further knowledge about the Spirit of God lives inside the person (inside you). (1 Cor 3:16-17)
This is a peculiar thought and maybe even a little weird. God lives INSIDE us? But how? And what’s it mean?
There is a scientific discovery along with a lexicological truth that puts the Spirit of God inside EVERY SINGLE person.
First, the saying of the Hebrew name for God, YHWH. These are the letters in the original bible language that comprise the name for God whose pronunciation sounds a lot like breathing.
Then, a discovery (with a bit of controversy as to its legitimacy) within the biochemistry world dealing with genetics that reveals something like the name of God written into our DNA through a pattern of bridges that hold the double DNA helix together. 10-5-6-5 is the pattern whose numbers correspond to the same Hebrew letters that comprise the name of God. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArR_UseV7Xk
These two elements create a reality that declares that we are indeed made in the image of God – from the cellular level to the breath in our lungs. But what does that mean for us really, and how does it make our physical problems any better?
Think of it like this: Ferrari makes a very sexy car and each of their models is made in that likeness. They don’t make junk and people pay big bucks to drive that brand. But these cars still break down, still have trouble, still get into wrecks, and still require maintenance. (Not unlike our bodies.)
But Ferrari isn’t making them with the intent to be broken. They make them for the purpose of taking that name into the world, so people can enjoy their ride (and a bunch of superficial nonsense), and for people to see the glory of the brand. (Not unlike what Jesus tells people regarding a man born blind – John 9:1-38; or what Paul and Peter write when speaking of the will of God, that is for us to BE like God – 1 Thess 4:3 & 7, 1 Peter 1:15-17).
We experience life in a physical world and even our spiritual encounters (for the most part) are in the physical realm. So, it is in our physical bodies that we find God, find meaning, find joy, find wholeness. While what we do in and with our bodies matters a great deal, and the things that happen to and in us are so impactful, the physical realm is not the main point. Since it is the very dwelling place of God, we discover our bodies are simply vessels through which God is active in our world, then the physical problems take on a different feel.
I wish I could explain every difficulty, sickness, struggle, and problem you might face or loved ones endure. I can’t. But I can encourage you to move beyond pursuing comfort, get past focusing on a pain free life and ease of living, and shift to the FULL life that Jesus came to give and makes available for you and me!
