Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen is credited with the discovery of the x-ray. This technology simply did not exist before he stumbled upon it while working with a cathode-ray tube in his laboratory. Just before the turn of the 20th century (1895) this finding was a revolutionary breakthrough in science. Obviously, the medical world was forever changed but the industrial world also saw transformation through this newfound technology.
People everywhere in Europe and then in the United States took hold of the x-ray as cathode tubes were very familiar to many scientists. The x-ray found itself in regular and frequent practice on the battlefields of war to find bullets in soldiers and in dentist offices for obvious reasons.
This is the internal, below the surface, personal reflection and self-discovery, we are talking about. We can appreciate the excitement in this burgeoning technological advancement! When we discover something inside that makes us aware of the way we tick, of the underlying ‘why’ behind our ‘what’ we come to life in a new way. We feel invigorated, revitalized. We have new purpose and direction. It’s very empowering.
There is a danger here however, so, before we go any further in the series, let’s look at it carefully.
There was one big oversight with the x-ray…radiation. It seemed as harmless as light. There was no way to understand or even foresee the great damage at hand, the long-term effects, and the breaking down of tissues going on under the surface. So, x-rays were given frequently and used very often exposing people to a very dangerous amount of radiation. We now know of the risk so there is limited exposure and preventative measures taken, especially for those using it on a regular basis.
Why does this matter for us as we journey inward?
Exposing our core is freeing. It can be daunting or scary to begin the process of shedding light for fear of not knowing what’s underneath or being known by others. But through that endeavor, the ability to be free and live with purpose and confidence becomes more available.
It’s like finding the bullet and knowing where the problem lies, undergoing surgery, and initiating healing to resume better quality of life. This is critical for wholeness of life.
Here’s what I believe: Shining light in the darkness robs it of its power. Absolutely. But, if you just go around exposing your darkness like girls on spring break in the early 2000s you’re going to be doing more damage than good.
What am I saying?
We’re talking about living free and there are two bits of wisdom in scripture that are worth noting. Read Galatians 5:13 and 1 Peter 2:16 for full details but hear this in short.
Do not use your freedom as an excuse for doing evil or indulging the parts of us that are not Christlike. Our spiritual/personal x-rays are absolutely important and the word of God cuts to the core in our hearts. But too much and inappropriate exposure will damage, like radiation, breaking down us, or others, in the process.
What do you need to get exposure on/in/about?
Where do you need freedom?
How have you been using your freedom for self-edification, self-indulgence?
How have you been destroying yourself or others with your exposure?
