This week is the pinnacle of the Christian calendar. We celebrate these facts: 1. The Son of God did something for us we could never do. 2. Jesus was brutally beaten, tortured, and killed. 3. He rose from the dead.
And to commemorate all this, we spread far and wide little plastic colorful eggs and get overstuffed on chocolate covered things and sweet colorfully wrapped sweet treats! (I’m not convinced that the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Eggs are anything but divine!)
That’s neither here or there or important. So, for our next series, we’re following the events of that time and checking out some words that rhyme, with ZOOM – some have a ‘b’ at the end, and some do not!
There’s a part in the story of scripture, before the chaos and mayhem of Jesus’ rigged trial and intense suffering that get’s little acknowledgment. Even I have read through this text and heard it preached on multiple times and I’ve never drawn attention to this particular element. I saw a note on Facebook drawing attention to it in a question and I couldn’t help but dig for myself.
Jesus’ disciples inquired of him about where they would have the Passover meal, a very important and special tradition for these Jewish people. Jesus told them to go into town and a man would meet them who was carrying a jar of water. Jesus said to follow him to the house to which he was going. Then, they were to ask that homeowner about the guest room prepared for them to eat the Passover meal.
They found everything as Jesus had spoken. WOW!
Ok – so, as we head into Easter, considering this story and the story of the cross, I cannot help but ask these questions:
“Is there any extra ROOM in my home/my life?”
“If so, for what is the extra ROOM in my home being used?”
“If not, what needs to be moved out, rearranged, or disposed of in order to make ROOM?”
We do not know all the details that went into this homeowner’s planning or what the circumstances were surrounding his intention for the room. Maybe there was a previous conversation or simply an act of the divine. Definitely don’t know for sure but we simply know that Jesus knew about it and planned to use it, and the homeowner was ready and willing.
Think about what this room held in the hours to follow:
It would be the most memorable Passover meals of their lives. This traditional meal for these religious people would have been of utmost importance and even more after they experience the rest of the story.
This room provided space for Jesus to demonstrate one of the most shocking lessons on selfless love they had never imagined.
In this guest room were delivered heavy words and veritable emotions as Jesus closed out his time with his disciples before the cross.
And in this place, these men wrestled with their own demons and had to confront their heart’s desire up against the truth of scripture.
Overall, the homeowner’s openness and furnished extra room was a place that impacted the lives of these men forever, and in turn, the rest of the world!
So, do an inventory check and find out what extra room capacity you have, how it’s being used, or what you can do to improve!
